Hozier Quilt: Finished!

First off, thank you SO much to all of you who had really sweet, encouraging things to say about my little project here! Hozier friends are *the* best kind of friends. ❤

Before I continue, please let me say: this is long. If you skim, I completely understand. Thank you for looking! And as always, your Hozier inspired projects are of great interest to our group. Everyone is welcome to guest author here anytime!

In 2017, I decided (for some reason) to begin learning how to make quilts. I really love it! It’s so much fun, but as with anything when you’re just beginning, I still have a lot to learn. It’s not like I expected though… The “standard” I always looked up to (Hozier content is coming quick, I PROMISE 🙂 ) was my grandmother. I felt her sewing was always really perfect. However, I even appreciate and enjoy the mistakes I’m making, because as our sweet friend (and amazing quilt maker) Marialuisa Comand said: a lot of love goes into a quilt. While you work, you look back on your memories, think about the hands who will receive your handiwork, and you hope it will make them smile/keep them warm.
So, as I was making this, I was reflecting on my memories over the last almost five years, and thinking of all the shows and lyrics.

I want to share that part of the quilt with you. 🙂
You already know about the first square. I shared that with you in the group, and most would easily recognize this official Hozier tee shirt, which came from my very first Hozier concert. That was in Nashville at Exit/In, September, 2014. James Bay was the opening act. Ruby Amanfu was one of Hozier’s backup singers. Completely surreal experience.
26840841_1800124429997804_6668607527899340386_oThe second square I made came from a tee shirt I had made when the group was really young and smaller. Some of us decided it would be a good idea for group meetups and such. Later, we decided to shorten things like this to “H24/7”.  Here is that shirt:
quilt142258_1803517399658507_1298605414_oThe third square I made came from a tee shirt which was used to raise funds for the Birthday Charity we all did for Hozier’s birthday gift in 2016. Those funds went to a great organization called Sweet Relief. Karel, our sweet friend in the group, sweetly sent me this shirt as a gift! You might say, well how/why can you chop it up and put it into a quilt then? That’s just the thing. I feel its life has even greater meaning and longevity this way. Additionally, a little piece of Karel went into the quilt. ❤  Here is that square:
quilt26942258_1803517399658507_1298605414_oThe fourth square was from a whimsical Instagram post of Hozier’s, which I think got many of our imaginations zipping. The apple in this cotton fabric isn’t red, but there again- imagination, right? I know some people who would like to be that wide-eyed princess receiving a poisoned apple from him (he’s the figure on the left, of course, at least we’ll say so). His post and the fabric it inspired me to use:

After these four squares, I mostly focused on song lyrics and concerts.
There was so much greatness to choose from, but right from the start, I knew I wanted to remember the poor fox from “In the Woods Somewhere” and also wanted to bring along a friend for him, one of the foxes from “In a Week,” so you’ll see them appear together on one square.  In my mind, these are separate foxes since in ITWS, the person speaking kills the fox and it’s of course the other way around in In a Week. In this quilt, though, both foxes live happily ever after enjoying each other’s company. We also have the two lovers’ from IAW remains in the tummy of the one fox. Ok, sorry, so sorry- I will quit about that and post some related photos. 😀
(Additionally, you can see in another of Hozier’s Instagram posts that his friend and Little Green Cars member Stevie Appleby took note of the fox tragedy.)

The foxes are also twinning with Hozier. Throwback to that time at the show in Columbus when someone threw the flower crown onstage and Hozier cutely put it on. (Then all we fans died, but we’re okay now.) If you took this photo and would like to be credited please holler! Leave a note here on this blog, let us know on Twitter, Facebook, wherever. Would be more than happy to credit you for this great photo! flowercrown
This fabric, from Judy Quintero, is appropriately named Floral Fox/Wild One. And without further ado, here is Mr. Fox, all healed, living his best afterlife:

The inspiration for my next choice of fabric came from a few sources:
In the Woods Somewhere

“When I awoke
The moon still hung
The night so black
That the darkness hums”

“I heard a scream
In the woods somewhere
A woman’s voice
I quickly ran
Into the trees”

Lay Me Down
(Sam Smith cover)
“The days just seem so dark
The moon and the stars
Are nothing without you”

Better Love
“Staring in the blackness at some distant star”
“I have never loved a darker blue
Than the darkness I have known in you, own from you”
“Like fire weeping from a cedar tree”

Sweet Thing
(Van Morrison cover)
“I shall raise my hand up into the night, to the night sky
And count the stars that are shining in your eye
Just to dig it all and not to wonder that would be fine
You said its fine not to read in between the lines”

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd)
(covered by Trinity Orchestra)
“You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.”
(See that performance here.)

Maybe you will think of other references! Here is the description of that fabric, and a photo. It has metallic accents on the trees, which I love:
“Silver Metallic, Black & Gray Moon & Trees Quilt Fabric, Halloween.
Henry Glass Fabric, Fright Night 1112M, First Blush Studios.
100% cotton yardage. 43/44″ wide.”
woods
The next fabric (I promise I’m at least halfway to showing you the entire thing) (zip to the end if this is tiresome lol) I mostly picked because of In a Week (corpses and flowers). It could be the remains of the “other man” who hung from a tree in From Eden… but nahh. Maybe the remains of the souls claimed by the lover in Run…
In a Week
“We’ll lay here for years or for hours
Your hand in my hand, so still and discreet
So long, we’d become the flowers”

My Love Will Never Die (cover)
“Flowers
Flowers grow
Where I’m laid
To rest”

How could I leave out all his references to blood? And those who wanted him to record his song by that title… Well, you may not be able to have that, but you can have a quilt with blood! Ok, not the same? 🙂

Just click on the lyrics if you want to see him perform Blood. ❤
Tryin’ hard to recognise Some pure motive inside of me A creature that would horrify Any child that I used to be Oh, give no faith to show Started to smile so I showed my teeth No more than flesh and bone Doin’ so much just to watch someone bleed [Chorus] But I love the very blood of you It keeps its heat in spite of you Oh, the heart that beats To keep you here with me always [Verse 2] Tryin’ hard, I nearly find Innocence in spite of me Oh, creature that would terrify Any child left inside of me Oh, that’s a cold insight Nothin’ above us and nothin’ below Ahh, but you might be right If there is no heaven and there is no soul
I got those from genius. com btw so if mistakes… you know the rest. *wink*

More blood from that fox I’d think:
In the Woods Somewhere
“His bones exposed
His hind was lame
I raised a stone
To end his pain”

Run
“Rare is this love, keep it covered
I need you to run to me, run to me, lover
Run until you feel your lungs bleeding”

Honestly, Cherry Wine was my reason for selecting this fabric. A normal person might choose a wine themed fabric, or a wine color, but me? No.
Also, maybe a vivid visual reminder of Hozier’s efforts to help end domestic violence.

Cherry Wine
“The way she tells me I’m hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine”

Arsonist’s Lullaby lovers, it’s your turn!
This song is an anthem for how many thousands of us Hozier fans who struggle with reigning in our demons? To remind us of The Man’s instructions to always keep ’em on a leash, I have contained some safely here in the quilt. Heehee! 🙂

The back of the quilt is Antipill Fleece Buffalo Plaid. Oh so soft and cozy!! I had concertgoers on cold/rainy nights in mind when I made this, so I used 80/20 cotton/polyester batting that does not shift or gather. Wrap up in your Hozier blanky and stay warm! 🙂

Oh, I’m planning to somehow lose this quilt to benefit the Irish children’s organization we support: ISPCC.
That is if anyone likes it and thinks they may want me to auction or raffle it off. I’d be thrilled to do that! If not, I will keep it and my Hozier memories will literally keep my tootsies warm. LOL!! (Tootsies mean feet everywhere, right? If not, that could be awkward.) For now, it is neatly folded on my sewing table awaiting final touches: a tad more stitching and string cutting and sewing on of some black ball fringe. (Last I checked, my fringe was stuck in Memphis. Much of the south has been snowed in for a couple of days.)

There’s nothing left but for me to excitedly but humbly present the finished item to you. Remember the words of our friend Marialuisa. So much love. ❤
It’s not one of those immaculate, astonishingly perfect quilts like the Amish make. My sewing basket was made by them, though. I’d auction it instead, but I use it. 😀
I wish I could make one for each and every member. ❤

Thank you for checking out this post! Pop by  anytime to tell us about your arts and crafts. Speaking of art, HAPPY, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Hozier Fan Art and thank you, Lucy for running such a great site over there. ❤
